Justin / Designer and engineer

About

Hi, I’m Justin. I design and build software end to end: the idea, the interface and the code underneath it.

Websites people remember, and automation that gives you your hours back.

What I do

Some of it is tools that run on your own machine and keep your files there. Some of it is websites that behave like objects. Most of it I’ve built alone, which is how I like to know every layer.

From the backyard

The sky on this site is computed. These three I photographed myself.

An aurora glowing red and green above a line of bare trees at night
Aurora over the treeline
The Orion Nebula glowing pink and blue in a dense star field, with the orange Flame Nebula to its upper left
The Orion and Flame nebulae
A full moon against a black sky, its craters and rays sharp
A full moon

What I can do for you

  • WebsitesSites people remember and come back to: fast, easy to run, and built around what makes you different.
  • AutomationThe repetitive work between your tools, done for you on a schedule, so the hours go back to the work you like.
  • Apps and toolsiPhone apps, browser extensions and small tools that do one job well.

How I work

  • Local firstIf it can run on your own machine, it should. Your files stay where they are, and nothing is uploaded that doesn’t need to be.
  • Objects, not templatesA site should feel like something: a television, a zine, a trip through space. I start from what the thing is, not from a layout I’ve used before.
  • Built beside the person it’s forPetal was made with a teacher, and ShutterCoach around real photographs. A real Tuesday beats a persona.
  • Every layerInterface, front end, back end, and the maths when it’s called for. This site computes its own sky.

Questions

What do you build?
Open to a few small projects: websites, apps and automation. Websites: Sites people remember and come back to: fast, easy to run, and built around what makes you different. Automation: The repetitive work between your tools, done for you on a schedule, so the hours go back to the work you like. Apps and tools: iPhone apps, browser extensions and small tools that do one job well.
How do I start a project?
Email hello@justinthevoid.com. Say what you need, when you need it, and a rough budget; a few lines is plenty. You email what you need; I reply by email with questions. A written, fixed-scope proposal. I build it, and hand it over with everything you need to run it.
How much does it cost?
No fixed prices. Tell me the budget and I’ll say what fits. Every project starts from a written, fixed-scope proposal.
Where can I see your work?
Every project has a case study at justinthevoid.com/work/, including two demo sites made for fictional clients, Broadcast and Late Edition.
